Young Adult Review: Black Dawn by Rachel Caine

Black Dawn (The Morganville Vampires, #12)

With its eclectic mix of vampire and human citizens, Morganville, Texas, has always been a risky place to call home. But with the invasion of the vampire’s deadliest enemy, Morganville isn’t just in danger—it’s dying…

Ever since the draug—mysterious creatures that prey on vampires—took over Morganville, the lives of student Claire Danvers and her friends have been thrown into turmoil. Most of the town’s residents have evacuated, but Claire, Shane, Eve and Michael have chosen to stay and fight.Using the city’s water system to spread, the draug have rapidly multiplied. Things in Morganville look grim, especially since vampire Amelie—the town founder—has been infected by the master draug’s bite.
Now, if Claire and her friends don’t figure out how to cure Amelie and defeat the draug, it looks like Morganville will become little more than a ghost town…

It has been almost a year since I read the previous book in this series, but as soon as I saw Eve and Claire it was like meeting the family once again. These girls are my favorite on the book. Okay, Michael and Shane are pretty amazing, but the girls suffer more and always find the time to bring everyone together and to fight the evil of the moment.

So the draug is still a very dark presence in the city and now Amelie is hurt, so nobody actually knows what to do, but they got a few vampires back with the surprise attack at the end of last breath and now they have no idea what to do to save themselves.

Fun thing about this book was how Shane actually saved the day and had a brilliant idea, I just love how everyone in this group has a chance to shine and be the hero for a moment. This time it was Shane proving his bad days as a teenager were worth it.

But now we have some bad moments too with Eve and Michael trying to solve their relationship after he fed on her. Let’s face it he was suffering and in serious need of blood, so his mind was not really working and we can’t blame him for just survival instinct.

I liked this book, but Myrnin was once again not my favorite part, he had some good ideas along with Oliver, but I still don’t see him as the perfect guy just trying to save Claire. I loved this book and it closed really nice this chapter, but I have a feeling that Morganville is going to change a lot now.
