Romance Review: When We Touch by Brenda Novak

When We Touch (Whiskey Creek)

You’re invited to a wedding in Whiskey Creek, Heart of the Gold Country
Unfortunately, it’s the wrong wedding. Olivia Arnold is arranging the festivities—and it’s the hardest thing she’s ever done. Because she should be marrying Kyle Houseman. They were together for more than a year…. But her jealous sister, Noelle, stole him away—and now she’s pregnant.
All their friends in Whiskey Creek know as well as Olivia does that Kyle’s making a mistake. His stepbrother, Brandon, knows it, too. But Kyle’s determined to go through with it, for his child’s sake.
Olivia’s devastated, but surprisingly Brandon—the black sheep of the family–is there to provide comfort and consolation. The intensity between them, both physical and emotional, shows Olivia that maybe Kyle wasn’t the right man for her….
But is Brandon?

This was actually a longer novella, from my standards, but I read after the first book, because it’s usually better to understand the town and the people with a longer book. So I already knew the characters and it was nice meeting them again, but this one it’s set before book one.

Olivia was such a nice girl, and she deserves a better family, because everyone treats her so bad and believe she’s just jealous half the time, plus she has to do everything for her spoiled sister. When you take a look in the reason she is back in town it’s extremely wrong the way her mother and sister treats her, but she actually got better with this dose of reality and Brandon was a great change for her.

She needed a change and Brandon was perfect with his bad boy attitude, but full of good intentions. The wedding weekend was a nightmare, but Olivia learned to trust herself and survived just fine with a new love.

Charlotte Brand is tired of dull boyfriends and boring sex. Kingsley Edge, who owns clubs rumored to supply more than just cocktails, seems just the man to revive her: intense, sophisticated…and looking for a submissive he can train for an elite client.

Charlotte is seduced by the offer…and by Kingsley himself. Soon they are engaged in a series of lessons that test her darkest desires. But when their training is over, will Charlotte be ready to let him go?

Kingsley is so sexy and that accent is to die for, but Charlotte was actually really nice and I enjoyed how much she decided to surrender and discover her sensuality. It was a very spicy and hot little story and we got to know a bit more about dear King, but not all.
I had my guesses about this friend of his and it was quite nice to see Soren and Nora before the breakup, even if just for a second. We can clearly see that they are in love and everyone is aware of that.
But back to Kingsley, his methods of torture were actually really fun to see, because he enjoys what he does and that makes it even more real.

This short story spans a period of time starting from the last chapter of Spider’s Bite and ending right before the beginning of Tangled Threads. It’s told from Detective Bria Coolidge’s point of view and shows her search for her long-lost sister Genevieve Snow. What Bria doesn’t know is what she’s going to do about the fact that Genevieve also happens to be the assassin the Spider.

It was fun seeing that Fletcher was looking at Gin all along and he’s responsible for Bria Coolidge coming to town. But the best part is what Gin doesn’t know but Bria is actually looking for her long lost sister now that she’s discovered she’s alive.

I liked this little novella because we can Bria through all the events in the later book. Fun to know she’s not a bitch and it’s actually just like Gin thinking on the good and trying to save the world off Mab.

This short story takes place in between the events of Venom and Tangled Threads. It’s told from the points of view of Jo-Jo Deveraux and her sister, Sophia Deveraux. When a carjacker follows an injured Gin back to Jo-Jo’s beauty salon, Jo-Jo and Sophia join forced to eliminate the threat.

It was different to see Jo-Jo POV, but what I enjoy the most on these novellas is the fact we get to see what other very important characters think and this time we have an insight in the Deveraux sisters.
I’ve been thinking for awhile that Jo-Jo has a fairly good idea of what will happen in a fight between Mab and Gin, this novella only proved that is possible she does know the answer, but she’s much more than just that.
I also liked the fact how protective they are of Gin and it showed they really are a family.

Mistress Nora needs a vacation. She might be the one flogging the clients, but Kingsley, her sexy French boss, is the real sadist who rarely gives her a day off. They strike a backseat deal: Nora gets one month off and a trip to Europe if she can sneak into a rival BDSM club and get the dirt on the owner. But she’ll need more than her little red riding crop when she comes face to face with Brad Wolfe, the one man who stands between her and freedom.

My first time with Nora and Kingsley. I liked the relationship between these two and the best part is the fact we get to see how witty Nora is. I loved the conversation and the little snippets we got from Nora’s life.

I loved the fact she doesn’t take bull from others and enjoy her life to it’s fullest. This little night of pleasure takes place two years before the Siren. So we get to see Nora doing her best. And she’s only hoping for a vacation. What a girl must do to get a little time off.

Meghan Chase is finally getting used to being the Iron Queen, ruler of the Iron Fey. Her life may be strange, but with former Winter prince Ash by her side at last, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

But when they travel to the Summer and Winter courts’ gathering for Elysium, the oracle from Meghan’s past returns with a dire prophecy: “What you carry will either unite the courts, or it will destroy them.” Now Meghan faces a devastating choice that may determine the future of all fey—and her and Ash’s unborn child…

I love the Iron Fey series but I have a huge problem with these novellas. All their stories feels like a tease to me and I finish wanting more. I get a glimpse of Ash and of course Puck, but the story is too short for me to truly enjoy it.

This time I came prepared to what was coming and since this was just a freebie I feel a little better and don’t hate the book that much.

My principal issue was the fact we can barely see Ash fighting and when he and Puck decide to join battle it’s a little strange to see Megan win the fight.

I guess my problem is always wanting more. Nothing bad or truly evil this time around, just a glimpse of the future.

Chapter One of SWEET EVIL from Kaidan Rowe’s point of view.
Available on the author’s website as free bonus material under "Extras."

This chapter was interesting to see what is around Kai heads, but he was really a brute at first just expecting her to be a bitch like him at first and jumping to coclusions that I admit with his father that sort of thing is actually possible.

But it was fun seeing him lost for awhile and lost in the moment, plus he’s actually interesting trying to find a way to make her slip.

I liked this short glimpse into his mind and it’s funnier to watch him struggle.
