Review: Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins

Spell Bound (Hex Hall, #3)

Hailed as “impossible to put down,” the Hex Hall series has both critics and teens cheering. With a winning combination of romance, action, magic and humor, this third volume will leave readers enchanted.
Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.
Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?

It was really interesting seeing Sophie without her powers and once again discovering secrets from her parents. I don’t like the fact her mother is always hiding things that could easily be the reason for Sophie’s death and the world is in a brick of doom, so nobody could be trusted.

It was different discovering these amazon ladies. But I actually liked the Brannicks because their family had a reason and a very strange sense of right and wrong. It’s fun to meet the girls and see the dual perspective of the reasons.

After the way Demonglass ended really dark and Sophie had no idea who could be alive. But I liked the idea of putting them all together to discover one way of killing the demons and also thinking about saving the world by just reversing the spell.

The school is worst them ever and it’s actually crystal clear to everyone who the bad guys are and their strange and absurd reasons for creating the demons in the first place. I liked the series better in the begin and the idea of Sophie being a bad demon was not my favorite part.

Review: Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins

Demonglass (Hex Hall, #2)

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.
That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.
Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.
But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

Discovering she’s a demon was priceless, but I guess is understanding with all the secrecy and the reasons her family was so worried about her spells. But I liked her father and even enjoy her month of vacation in London. I though it was extreme to get a Removal so early on live, but after everything that happened on hex hall I get her.

I liked dear old daddy and the way he tried to help her and teach at the same time. It was fun to see the chaos these two could create together, but dangerous times also made her father work to understand why there are more demons being created.

Also, fun part: remember Archer? The boy Sophie had a crush on during her first year in Hex Hall? He’s back and he really works for The Eye, so reasons are definitely kill first question later because things are getting more strange lately than ever.

I never saw that person as the bad guy, but I totally understand the appeal and why everyone was on the secret except Sophie and her father.

Review: Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1)

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It’s gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie’s estranged father–an elusive European warlock–only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it’s her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

I have this book on my TBR pile for a long time and after hearing so much good thing about it was time to give this series a change and start with Sophie and her adventures in this school for gifted children.

I loved two things about this first book on the series: 1 – Sophie knows nothing about how to control her powers and she still tries to help people all around her; 2 – Her roommate and best friend is a vampire with a love for everything pink.

But the best of this book was the adventure and Sophie trying to understand her powers and everything that was happening at Hex Hall. It’s really interesting when she discover her father is the head of the council and a very important wizard responsible to send everyone to Hex Hall.

I found it weird the appearance of a ghost to her, but everything it’s strange in this school, but this strange even for this school. I liked Sophie ad the way she was always looking for the true. She’s a very determined girl and it made things more fun. Her mother kept many secret and I thought some of them were really important to share, but it made things more mysterious in the hunt.
